The Luce: St. Pete Beach's Postcard Inn Returns with a Marriott Glow-Up

The Luce pool deck with cabanas and loungers overlooking St. Pete Beach

For nearly two years, the corner of Gulf Boulevard at 63rd Avenue sat quiet — a boarded-up ghost of one of St. Pete Beach's most beloved hotels. The Postcard Inn, a 1957 midcentury classic that had hosted generations of beachgoers, took a direct hit from Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024 and never reopened. Until now. On June 11, that same address — 6300 Gulf Boulevard — came roaring back as The Luce, a Marriott Tribute Portfolio hotel that somehow pulls off the trick of feeling both brand-new and deeply familiar.

Same Soul, New Glow

The transformation was always in the cards. The property was purchased in 2022 for $83 million by LCP Group and Safanad, with plans for a major overhaul already on the table before the storms hit. What the hurricanes did was raise the stakes — and the timeline. After nearly two years of renovation, The Luce emerged under the management of Crescent Hotels & Resorts with 200 fully reimagined rooms, the largest pool on St. Pete Beach, and a design language that winks at Florida's past without getting stuck in it.

"Keeping the nostalgia of this building and this architecture was really important to us," said General Manager Jeremy DaSilva. "We got to do a little twist and modern flair to the design." That twist shows up everywhere: flamingo-pink accents against sleek stone, rattan finishes paired with bold tropical patterns, and a show-stopping lobby mural by Filipino-American painter Marianne Angeli Rodriguez that layers coral, teal, and sandy gold across the wall behind the front desk. The piece draws inspiration from St. Pete's own Sunken Gardens and the kitschy charm of vintage Florida postcards — a fitting welcome to a hotel that sits squarely between nostalgia and now.

The Rooms

Every guest room got the full treatment. Expect plush king or double-queen beds, 55-inch smart TVs with streaming, blackout curtains, mini fridges, and barware. The coffee situation is a cut above the standard hotel drip: each room comes with a LaVazza espresso machine. Bathrooms are stocked with SACHAJUAN products — the Scandinavian haircare brand — and feature oversized dry vanities with makeup mirrors that feel deliberately retro-chic rather than dated.

If you're looking to upgrade, the Bungalow Suites come with private outdoor lounges and QR-code ordering so you never have to leave your patio. Lanai Rooms open onto semi-private seating steps from the pool. And for Marriott Bonvoy members, there's currently an offer of 3,000 bonus points per night on new bookings.

Where to Eat and Drink

The anchor restaurant is Sundrop, an indoor-outdoor space anchored by a fire-pit table and an outdoor cocktail lounge. It serves seven-day brunch and dinner, and the menu leans into elevated coastal classics:

  • Gulf seafood towers and freshly shucked oysters

  • Wagyu steak and Chilean sea bass with blood orange beurre blanc

  • Lemon pancakes with mascarpone and burrata-avocado toast at brunch

  • The Luce Lobster Roll paired with craft cocktails or cold-pressed juices

  • Pink Flamingo cocktail — a crowd favorite, served with a dramatic bubble dome

There's also a pool bar for drinks without leaving your lounger, Frankie's Pizza Parlor for a quick bite, and — coming this fall — Baby Turtle Beach Club, a beachfront bar and grill that will serve American coastal fare from dawn to dusk directly on the sand. Rum tastings run every Wednesday and Friday afternoon at Sundrop, where bartender Steve has already developed a local following for his off-menu rum old fashioned.

The Vibe

The Luce is betting hard on programming that gives guests reasons to stick around. A dedicated Beach Butler delivers drinks, sunscreen, and charging stations right to your towel. The pool — the biggest on St. Pete Beach — is flanked by cabanas and serviced by a "sunshine butler" ready to refresh your sunglasses. Weekend yoga sessions run Saturday mornings and Sunday mornings in the courtyard. Live DJ "Groove Sessions" fire up Friday and Saturday evenings from 6 to 10 p.m.

The signature daily ritual is the Sunset Social: every evening one hour before sunset, the hotel hosts a courtyard countdown toast with cocktails, mocktails, and music. It's the kind of thing that sounds like marketing copy until you're actually there, drink in hand, watching the Gulf turn gold. There's also a curated Spotify playlist guests can stream before, during, and after their stay — a small touch that says a lot about who this hotel is for.

The Bigger Picture

The Luce's opening matters beyond the property line. St. Pete Beach took a beating from the 2024 hurricane season, and seeing a major address on Gulf Boulevard not just reopen but level up is a real milestone. Alison Herman, owner of Larry's Ice Cream Shop across the street, put it plainly: "It makes us feel great to know it's increased traffic on the beach. They can see us across the street just walking. It's a wonderful feeling to know that they're back."

The hotel also adds 14,000 square feet of event space — including a 2,280-square-foot ballroom and seven distinct venues that can handle up to 200 guests — making it a legitimate option for Gulf-front weddings, retreats, and celebrations. For a beach town that's always run more on charm than conference centers, that's a notable addition.

Tammy Black, the first guest to check in on opening day, captured the balance the hotel struck: "It doesn't seem like a typical motel on the beach-type vibe. But it does have that retro and the coolness about it. So, I'm happy to be here."

What They're Saying

"We've thoughtfully curated every touchpoint, from our beachfront butler service and poolside cabanas to the bold artistry of our lobby and the coastal flavors of Sundrop," DaSilva said. "June 11th marks the start of a new chapter for hospitality on St. Pete Beach and a meaningful addition to this community."
